My Fav LI Beach

If you live on Long Island, or at least visit often, you know there are many beaches to visit. And everyone has their favorite. There's the south shore, north shore, out east, and of course the biggies like Robert Moses and Jones Beach.

My favorite beach is "Overlook". It is a Town of Babylon Ocean beach, and you need a parking permit, which costs $35. They have a new playground, and tons of soft sand! Hungry? Visit the Beach Hut for yummy food and adult beverages. Make sure to pack up your car, items I always like to bring to the beach: cooler with plenty of cold water, sunblock, umbrella, bug spray, hats, chairs, towels, blankets, buckets and shovels for the kids, and snacks. So...enjoy your summer and visit the Long Island beaches! Please try to keep the beaches smoke free!

Memorial Day Weekend 2011

It's that time of the year again. We buy the beach pass, load up the cooler, and take out the sunblock. It's time to hit the beaches, fire up the grill, and enjoy the first weekend of the "summer". Although the first official day of Summer isn't until June 21st, Memorial Day weekend is a hint of whats to come.

There are many things to do on Long Island for this Memorial Day, and you don't have to travel far! The local beaches are a great way to spend the day, be sure and buy a season parking pass if you plan on going more than once. Otherwise, you have to pay $20 each time you visit.

TO DO: Saturday and Sunday. The annual Air Show at Jones Beach. 10AM to 3PM.

"Veterans Stand Down"

The Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency will be hosting it's 5th Annual Countrywide Veterans Stand Down at the Health, Sports and Education Center at Suffolk Community College, Brentwood Campus.

Federal, state, county and private agencies will be there to help veterans in need of health, employment, financial, housing, educational and VA benefit services. There will be stations set up including: meals, eye glasses, hair cuts, food pantry and clothing closet.

Today is quite chilly, with a high of 28. Snow is to start late tonight. Tomorrow, Tuesday February 1st, expect snow/"winter mix". 90% chance of precipitation. Tomorrow night, expect freezing rain.
Stay in doors if you can. Bundle up, and run to the store today if you are out of anything.

Can you believe how fast January went by. Exactly one month ago Christmas was only a few days behind us, and New Years Eve was a few days ahead. Now were almost in February 2011!

I hope you have enjoyed your January. Back to school and work, and lots of snow (and snow days off of school). What is there to do in this weather? Well when the roads are icy, I say stay in. Today the roads aren't too bad, especially the main ones. They were plowed and had plenty of traffic. If your car is still snowed in, well where have you been? I shoveled and cleaned off my car yesterday. (Truth be told, I only cleaned off my car, lucky for me a helpful neighbor and her trusty snow blower, dug out my car and cleared my walk way ( a special Thank you to my Lindenhurst neighbor).

So, it is the last weekend of January, what are your plans? If you're heading out, drive safely. Don't talk/text and drive!

Get Snow Ready

After the last snow storm, the "blizzard of 2010", people are prepping for the next snow fall.

Starting tonight, we are set to get SNOW on Long Island. Yesterday I heard it was 6-9 inches, this AM it was 8-10, now I'm hearing up to 20 inches! My goodness! Are we prepared? Well I sure hope the towns plow this time, and don't plow in my driveway, like last year!

The National Weather Service has issued a storm warning for Long Island, the warning is in effect from 7p.m. tonight, until 6p.m. Wednesday. 10-15 inches of snow is expected, and wind gusts up to 35 m.p.h.

Tips for Winter/Snow Safety

Stock up (Food items like bread, eggs, canned goods, cereal, milk, and alcohol, and first aid supplies if you do not have any, medicines, etc.)

Get your shovels ready (shovel every 5-10 inches or so) and get rock salt/sand too
Make sure your car gas tank if filled up
Have cash on hand

Use common sense, and stay off the roads!

Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by the American Legion Massapequa Post 1066 starting at 11 a.m. sharp at Klestinec Park, Broadway, Massapequa, across from the James Funeral Home. Everyone is invited to attend.

Free Tours for Veterans at the Fire Island Lighthouse. As a way to "thank you," the Fire Island Lighthouse will offer free tours on this day to all veterans with military ID. More info:Fire Island Lighthouse or call (631) 661-4876.

Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar will thank our nation's veterans and active duty military by inviting them to their neighborhood Applebee's for a well-deserved FREE meal. A selection of complimentary entrees will be available for these local heroes on this day as dine-in guests at all Applebee's restaurants throughout the United States, including all 21 Long Island Applebee's.

The Long Island Applebee's will open one hour earlier for lunch starting at 10 a.m. and continue serving dinner until midnight or later in order to accommodate more of our deserving military. Please go to their website to locate the nearest Applebee's.

Top Farms to Visit this Fall

Get ready to pick up some pumpkins, jump on a hay ride, and sip some apple cider, it's fall, and here's a list of some of the top Long Island farms to visit.

Schmitt’s Family Farm
29 Pinelawn Rd, Melville
Schmitt’s offers a hay pyramid (for climbing and sliding down), a corn maze, wagon ride and farm tour, farm animals, and having nothing to do with Halloween or Fall, a pirate ship themed playground (a favorite of my kids). Schmitt’s also has one of the most well-organized pre-picked fields of pumpkins, with the pumpkins organized by size. By the way, for grown ups only: Schmitt’s also offers one of Long Island’s spookiest Haunted Houses and a Haunted Corn Maze at night.

White Post Farms
250 Old Country Rd, Melville
Enjoy a Fall Farm Festival at White Post Farms. Offering sing-a-long hayrides, a stage performance that allows your kids to preform in, pony rides, kids karaoke, games and activities for your kids to play, White Post is one of the most popular and biggest Fall farms. Plan a full day at White Post though, if for no other reason, you’ll spend an hour trying to peel your child out of the bouncy-houses.

More nursery than Farm, Hicks is probably the closest and simplest alternative for city-folk. A friendly “Otto the Ghost” adventure tour, a horse drawn hay ride, children's story hours, and a small petting zoo all add to less spooky and more friendly atmosphere, which makes Hicks one of the best spots for younger children to visit. They have bins of pre-picked pumpkins and an easy to find and get to location.

If your definition of “pumpkin picking” means actually going into a pumpkin field and picking a pumpkin from the vine, this is the best (and one of the only) spots. This time of year you can also find all kinds of vegetables to pick plus apples and some other fruits.

Good Bye Summer, Hello Fall!

With the end of summer, I find myself missing the beach trips, the walks, and the heat. School is back in session, and the ease of summer nothings have come to a halt.

The summer at my house was waking up late, packing up the cooler, and laying on the beach. It was taking walks to the library, and day trips to the park or Adventureland. Stopping at 7 11 for Slurpee's to cool us down, and at night picking a movie out at the Red box DVD rental, and picking up ice cream at the grocery store to make homemade Mcflurries.

The heat of the summer is over, and the cool air is upon us. I love the smell of the air this time of year, and although I'll miss the heat of the sun on my face, and my sun kissed shoulders, fall is by far my favorite season.

The first official day of Autumn this year is September 22nd. With the fall comes the colored leaves, the raking, my Birthday, and Halloween! I'll be putting my Halloween decor up the first day of October.

So, enjoy the reds, yellows, and oranges of Autumn, enjoy the nice cool weather, get out your light jackets, and pick out your Halloween costume. Embrace the fall, because December is coming quick (and that means Holiday shopping, ah!)

Stay tuned, there is plenty to do on Long Island, and this fall I plan on listing some races(runs or walks), and events i.e. Fall Festivals, Pumpkin Picking, and Haunted Houses.

Long Island is on HURRICANE / TROPICAL STORM watch. Please pay careful attention to the news, and weather. Tune in to News 12 Long Island, 1010 winds (AM radio), or the Weather Channel. Online, visit http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/.

Hurricane Safety Checklist:

Check your disaster supplies and replace or restock as needed.

Bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind (e.g. bicycles, lawn furniture, toys, trash cans).

Close windows, doors and hurricane shutters. If you do not have hurricane shutters, close and board up all windows and doors with plywood.

Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible so that food will last longer if the power goes out.

Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances.

Fill your car’s gas tank.

Talk with members of your household and create an evacuation plan. Planning and practicing your evacuation plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event.

Learn about your community’s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for your pets to be cared for.

Evacuate if advised by authorities. Be careful to avoid flooded roads and washed out bridges.

I got a pamphlet in the mail yesterday "Unprepared is Unprotected" from MEND Mitigation Education for Natural Disasters.

They say that Long Island will experience a dangerous hurricane/coastal storm before 2014. Many Long Island homes will be affected, and they are having meetings on how to prepare.

Walk-a-thon Saturday, May 1st

Come down to Tanner Park, in Copiague (NY) on Saturday, May 1st (Rain Date Sunday, May 2nd) 2010, to help raise money for the Nemaline Myopathy organization, and a local Long Island family who is affected by this disease.

Nemaline Myopathy is a neuromuscular disease that causes trouble with breathing. People with nemaline myopathy (or NM) usually experience delayed motor development and weakness in the arm, leg, trunk, throat, and face muscles.

The park has a one-mile loop, and you can walk as many times as you want. We all know walking is great exercise!

Find a Run/Walk Race

If one of the things you like to do on the weekend includes running, then you should hit a race!

Long Island offers many 5K and 10K races, a 1/2 marathon, a full marathon, and fun runs!

Whether you've been running for a long time, or are just starting, races are a great way to meet other runners, get in shape, donate to organizations, and see more of Long Island.

My first 5K race was in 2004, I barely finished, my time was about 34 minutes, I was 18, and I won first place in my age group. I was the only one in my age group! I was in many races after that, my best 5K time being 28 minutes in 2005. I was very proud of myself. The races are fun, and from my experience runners are such nice and welcoming people! When you sign up for the race, and pay your fee, you get a Tee shirt, and for some races a "chip" that you tie to your shoelace, which calculates your time. Most races have water along the way, and at the end yummy snacks including bagels, muffins, and fresh fruit. So, if you like to run, or jog, and want to mix up your routine hit a race, it will motivate you to the end! Each race awards a top Male runner, top Female runner, and the top 3 in each age group, there is also a race walker category, and Clydesdale, visit the running websites below to learn more.

The Pillsbury Dough Boy
At more than 63 times his traditional 8 3/4-inch size, the Doughboy balloon will measure 53.7 feet in length, 34.4 feet in width and will be 46.4 feet tall. This Doughboy will rise to the occasion filled with 12,280 cubic feet of helium.

Ronald McDonald
Ronald McDonald first made his Macy's Parade debut in 1966. For the 2009 parade, Ronald wears the world's largest pair of ice skates. Measuring 76.4 feet long, 28.8 feet wide and 48.6 feet tall, Ronald will be inflated with 13,650 cubic feet of helium on Parade day.

Sailor Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse, who just celebrated his 81st birthday on November 18, will salute the crowds in his nautically inspired red, white and blue sailor gear as he rides down the Parade route.

Sailing aboard an anchor that is approximately four times the size of an actual cruise ship anchor, Mickey measures 48.1-feet long, 33.6-feet wide and 60.9-feet tall. Sailor Mickey will be filled with 14,750 cubic feet of helium on his maiden voyage on Thanksgiving Day.

Spider Man
Marvel's Spider-Man, makes a big return to the skies over Manhattan sure to thrill "Spidey" fans. After a decade, the legendary crime-fighting web-slinger returns to the Parade line-up in celebration of Marvel's 70th Anniversary. Spider-Man made his Macy's Parade debut in 1987, becoming an instant classic.

The new, more modern and muscular Spidey is in full crawling mode with one hand set to release his web. On Parade day, the Spider-Man balloon will measure 78-feet long, 37.8-feet wide and 29.1-feet tall and will be filled with 11,800 cubic feet of helium.

The 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will feature several new floats and the all-time favorite, Santa Claus, will make his entrance in a brand new sleigh. This is the first time in more than 40 years that Santa has a new sleigh.

The North Pole is showcased by Santa's Toyshop home and by a giant ice and granite obelisk that is supported by ice sculptures of a Walrus and a Polar Bear. Santa's Sleigh is a gigantic float that measures 60-feet long, 22-feet wide and is 3 1/2 Stories tall.

This weekend the farm was busy, busy! I went with the family on Sunday, and it was packed. You parked, and then walked onto a filed, with the option of taking a free hayride, or walking. There were pumpkins, eggplants, green beans, and peppers all you-pick.

Lewis and Clark Expedition: Highly Recommended
Hours: 10am-5pm
We started with the 7 acre corn maze. ($8/each, coupons available at their website). The maze was broken into 4 colors, white, blue, yellow, and green. We were given a Maze Map & Picture Find, along with a crayon. Nine boxes to fill with animals. There were "rubbing stations" throughout the maze, in which you stop and rub the crayon and paper over the shape of the animal. Everyone was having fun, and even the adults were lost! More than once I heard a kid say "can we just get out of here already?" It was an adventure, and good exercise.

There were plenty of pumpkins to choose from. The kids had fun picking their own.
They were $.69/pound.

My Review **

After finding this place by accident (we were looking for another theme park), I realized I was here before. When it was "Bullwinkles". It was very hot, there was almost no shade. There were kiddie rides: train, small coaster, carousel, and bumper cars. The rock wall was closed when we were there. The best part (for the kids) was the bumper boats and mini golf. Think of this place as a cheap stay-cation (sort-to-speak). We lasted there about 3 hours. The indoor "arcade" is large. The restaurant looked small, and probably good for kids birthday parties only. Over all the place was decent. Mini golf is always fun, although there are better (and cleaner) min-golf places on Long Island.

Sunken Forest

The Sunken Forest on Sailor’s Haven is one of the few remaining maritime forests on the eastern seaboard. It features trees that have been twisted and shaped by the constant salt spray, freshwater marshland, and abundant wildlife. Fire Island’s Sunken Forest is a perfect place to get out of the sun and take a peaceful stroll. Guided tours are available during the summer months. Maintained by The Fire Island National Seashore, Sunken Forest earned its name because it appears lower than the surrounding water. The forest is not actually below sea level -- the high surrounding sand dunes that protect this environment create the illusion of being lower than sea level.

The Sunken Forest spans approximately 40 acres, so there is plenty to see. You can walk for miles up and down the roller coaster boardwalks that carry you over two rows of sand dunes. In Sunken Forest’s depths, keen-eyed naturalists will recognize the American holly, sassafras, and shadblow trees that make up the oldest continuously growing forest on Long Island. Other plant species like the winged sumac, bayberry, blueberry, wild grape, bearberry, and poison ivy color the forest floor. Wildlife watchers will be thrilled at Sunken Forest’s 300 species of birds, and may even catch a glimpse of deer, red fox, raccoons, and other locals.

Sunken Forest can be reached by the Sayville Fire Island ferry to Sailor’s Haven during the summertime. At other times of the year, the closest Fire Island ferry stop is at Cherry Grove, a mile east.

Stars Over Montauk by Grucci
Bring a blanket or chair to Umbrella Beach in Montauk , on Old Montauk Highway, just west of the town. Look up and you'll be treated to a fireworks display by Grucci from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. Rain date: July 5th.

Jones Beach Fireworks Extravaganza
An annual event, the spectacular fireworks show on the Fourth of July starts at 9:30 p.m., lighting up the sky above the shores of Jones Beach State Park. If you’re thinking of attending, make sure you get there very early. There's always a huge crowd of people who want to see the show. For more information, call (631) 321-3510.

Nautical Cruise Lines
Nautical Cruise Lines offers a great vantage point to view the fireworks at Jones Beach without worrying about parking spaces. The Long Island Jones Beach Fireworks Show Cruise takes place on Saturday, July 4 from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Cruise in style, sip champagne and sample hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour. There’s a sit-down dinner, open bar and dancing as well. When the fireworks start, you’ll have a “front row seat” onboard the Nautical Empress, sailing from Freeport’s Nautical Mile. Tickets are $149.99 plus tax per person. You must be 21 years or older to participate in this cruise. ID is required upon boarding.

1. 57 Chevy Ride (red)

You might not be driving along route 66, but you'll feel like you are after a couple of these zingers!

1 shot of Southern Comfort
1 shot of Gin
1/3 cup of Orange Juice
1/3 cup of Pineapple Juice
Dash of Grenadine

Add liquor, juice, and ice to a cocktail shaker. Cover, shake well, then strain into a tall cocktail glass filled with ice.

2. Snow White Cooler (white)

There's really nothing innocent about this concoction, but the result is a frothy off-white cocktail sure to please.

2 shots of Bailey's Irish Cream
1 Shot of Blended Whisky

Add liquor and ice to a cocktail shaker. Cover, shake well, then strain into a cocktail glass. May serve over ice, if desired, especially in particularly warm weather.

3. Alaska Ice Tea (blue)

What better to serve on a hot summer day than a cold treat inspired by the frozen north.

½ Shot of Gin
½ Shot of Vodka
½ Shot of White Rum
½ Shot of Cointreau
½ Shot of Blue CuraÁao
7UP or Sprite

In a tall cocktail glass half filled with ice, layer each shot in order listed. Top off with soda and enjoy!

4. Stars and Stripes (red, white, and blue!)

It doesn't get any more patriotic than this- you'll wow your guests with the colorful layers!

1 shot of Blue CuraÁao
1 shot of Light Cream

Build the layers in a short cocktail glass. (Hint: pour the liquid over the back of a spoon as you add them to the glass to help layer.) Serve and enjoy.

I've been to White Post Farms a bunch of times, and I keep going back because the kids love it! It is very family friendly, and for those who love the outdoors, it will keep you busy.

When you arrive you can go right to the play area, which consists of the Animal farm, Landscaped Play Houses, playground, and Mining Village, a new activity where the kids can get gems!

The playgrounds and mini houses can keep the kids busy for hours. You can feed the animals food, or bottles, pet them, and take lots of photos. There are sinks to wash up when your done with the animals. They also offer pony rides.

ABC show "Wipeout" at Jones Beach

ABC's summer hit "Wipeout" comes to Jones Beach. The show's "Road Trip" appears on the Boardwalk, East End, Field 6.

When: May. 24: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The event will feature a "modified replica" of "Wipeout's" obstacle course, including the Spinning Log Roller and Sucker Punch Wall.

Participant/survivors win stuff like water bottles, rally towels and T-Shirts. Plus, get your picture taken with Ballsy, the "Wipeout" mascot.
